7th Edition 40k is bringing some huge changes, perhaps the biggest being the addition of a Psychic Phase. With the new phase, we are seeing totally new mechanics for manifesting psychic powers, and the ability for defending players to Deny a broader range of powers. For the complete rundown, check out my article at:
It's official; 7th Edition Warhammer 40k is upon us. We are mere weeks away from the new book and a deluge of analysis. As of right now, we have some leaks from White Dwarf Weekly. This is actually some great information and we can see already how the game will change forever. Check out my sneak-peak at the link below!

I got a game of 40k in yesterday, in the first time in over a month! I played my Chaos Space Marines as my primary detachment (which I hadn't done in many more months!) and I played versus my friend's Ultramarines. It was a fun battle with a narrative flare and I was surprised how fun the Chaos codex was again.

I didn't get a chance to run the new Crimson Slaughter rules, but I wanted to jump back into the Chaos codex proper so I could have a better frame of reference for the new supplement. I finally read through the whole thing and have written a full review. Check it out below and then stick around for some thoughts on my battle.

Crimson Slaughter Codex Review

So the battle . . . first, I won. We played the Relic mission up to the end of Turn 4 and my cultists were in possession of the relic and my opponent had no troops left with the positioning to take it, and he had diminished firepower to kill my remaining troops.

However, it was a close battle up until the end. We played 1,500 points. My list:

Chaos Sorcerer w/ Biomancy

5 man Noise Marines with Blastmaster

2 x CSM units with lascannon/flamer and missile launcher/plasma

2 x cultists

3 x Obliterators w/ Nurgle

Heldrake w/ bale flamer

Herald of Nurgle with Biomance and Nurgle spell

10 x Plaguebearers.

1 beast of nurgle

My opponent's list composed of basically this:

Chapter Master

Librarian

2 Tac squads

Razorback

Predator

Thunderfire Cannon

Scouts

2 Dreadnaughts (1 drop pod)

Stormtalon

A couple of key points. First, I kept almost everything stationary the first turn to fire every heavy weapon I had. I did charge forward with the cultists and the beast of nurgle. The plaguebearers were kept in reserve.

By pushing my cultists forward early, my opponent went to eliminate them before they could take possession of the relic. This saved my better units from early damage. Also, even firing one heavy here and there, I was able to destroy his first dreadnaught and claim First Blood.

He surged forward with everything, putting early pressure on me, but I resisted the urge to press forward.

On turn 2, my Daemons came in, right in front of one of his flanks and ended up in a large crater with a 5+ cover save... which was improved to a 3+ shrouded. This stopped his advance on one flank because he was not equipped for close assault. He elected to stand and shoot my nurgles, which they are highly resistant to! Also, I got a turn 2 assault on this thunderfire cannon with my Beast of Nurgle, which had moved 24" plus assaulting by turn 2. Love those things! It did die on turn 4, but tied up his cannon for 2 turns!

With his push bogged down by daemons, I then sent my chaos marines forward on Turn 3. My plaguebearers killed his predator in assault. My chaos marines killed his razorback in assault, and my Heldrake came in to torch marines. It started to turn into a route.

By the end of Turn 4 my opponent had 1 dreadnought left, a drop pod, chapter master, a librarian, Chronos without his tank, a lone techmarine, his stormtalon (with 1 HP) and a small scout squad hiding in a building.

I still had my Oblits, my Noise Marines, a half squad of cultists (in possession of the relic), my sorcerer, two half squads of chaos marines, my heldrake, my herald of nurgle and 5 plaguebearers. It was a bloody battle, but I had more operating squads, the relic, and lots of heavy weapons left on the table. We called it and shook hands.

A couple of things: it was nice to play with two fully painted armies. My Chaos army is all painted, but not everything is detailed. My opponent, however, has every marine and vehicle detailed out. This hobby is so much more fun when you can play with two nearly completed armies! Also, I still saw that thunderfire cannons are tough! It was the only thing really killing my army!

Also, 40k is a mix of many things . . . but you need troops and you need heavy weapons! I don't think two full tac squads was enough for my opponent to really press me, as they just couldn't concentrate their firepower to kill my models fast enough.

Cultists are still great . . . as they are cheap, take up space, and make your opponent kill them. The Heldrake is still the champ, as it killed 10 marines (half of his tactical squads) over 2 turns, with the addition of wounding the librarian and taking a hull point off the Storm Talon. Also, Plaguebearers are worth their cheap points, especially with a herald to buff them with feel no pain and some psychic powers. Miasma spell from Nurgle list was great!

That's about it. I really enjoyed playing my chaos again . . . I just wish I could use my new Knights with them! Again, here's the link to my Crimson Slaughter review. Thanks for reading!
Alright, gamers! I've posted up a detailed review of the new Imperial Knights Codex! I read through it page by page last night, slept on it, and have been writing like mad since this morning. My review is actually split into two parts. The first part covers the physical product, the history of the Knights, and the artwork contained. The second part covers force selection, Allies, datasheets, and the rules! Check it out!

Imperial Knight Codex Review!

I really like this book. I was very surprised by the full color plates, the artwork, and the photography. The rules weren't much of a surprise because they've slowly been leaked, but I was glad to have things confirmed! Did I mention that the book explains Daemon Knights? Check it out if you like and leave a comment here or there to share your opinion. Thanks for reading!

I was able to pick up my order from the local store last night: two Imperial Knights! I was excited to get home and start building, but it wasn't until about 8:30 that I started putting knife-to-spru. So what's inside the kit? Let's loo at photos of the box opening and then some shots of hobby progress!

First, the box is a thick cardboard. There was no celophane wrapper. There is a sliding drawer in the box, actually, and it feels quite sturdy.

Also, the back of the box has some inspirational art and a size comparison:

I'm building both knights side-by-side because I think it will go quicker that way. Once I've figured out how to build one subsection, I then switch to the other knight and quickly repeat. It's been working so far. In about 4 hours time I was able to get these built up to here:

Did I say quickly? Well, I suppose 4 hours for two kits isn't too bad. Keep in mind that this time also includes reading the instructions, snipping, cleaning, and scraping. I didn't glue the models to the bases yet, but wanted to include them for the sake of scale.

Alright, that's enough for the moment. I have more pictures coming! Questions? Be sure to check out my other 40k articles, including more pictures of the Knights and more tips on building here:

I just pre-pre-ordered two Imperial Knights from my local independent store. I say pre-pre-ordered because our GW rep asks the owner what he think he'll need/want a few days before customers can officially order a new product. I'm nervous and a little scared, as this is the largest single order I've ever placed for a game. Ever. What am I thinking?

Here's my plan. I really like the models and my airbrush begs to be pulled out and used with such large figures. I've recently got into oil painting for glazes and using weathering powders. I've made some pretty killer models this last year and I really think I can do these knights justice.

However, I'm not made of money. Also, I don't even know if I'll be able to field these knights, as I don't own an Imperial Army of any kind. Can these knights ally with Eldar? With Orks? With Daemons?? That might be too much to ask. So how can I drop over $200 on models that I may not even be able to use?

My goal is to paint these models for the sake of painting them, and if there is interest, selling them to someone who likes the paint job. This might be to a local person at the shop, but perhaps even an Ebay store. Other than losing some hours, I can't believe that I'll actually lose money. I will also be getting great time painting amazing models, which is never wasted.

Here are a couple shots of some airbrushed models so you can see where I'm coming from.

A recent WWII StuG I painted for a friend.

A German Panzer IV for the same friend, with a few friends (protection against deep-striking Allies with melta guns, of course).

Some 40k models I've airbrushed over the last few months. I really like the Mymeara Eldar. I still need to fill in all the details, but it's not a bad start.

So back to the Knights . . . I hope you are starting see my vision for them. Why two? When it comes to airbrushing, doing two models is hardly any more time than doing a single model. Most of the time is used during set up, swapping colors, and cleaning up afterwards. I think two models will be a great time saver, and I'll either have 2 to sell, or 1 to sell and 1 to keep. We will see!

Drop me a line if you like these recent models. If you have any questions, I'd be love to help. Thanks for reading!
It's official: Imperial Knights are coming to 40k tabletops everywhere! We've had some leaked information and I spent some time breaking down the stats. Rumor has it that we will see an actual Codex, but what does that mean? Check out my review of the new models, rules (Ion shield!), and some speculation.

Also, we have news about a Codex: Legion of the Damned. The White Dwarf weekly specifically states that this will be for bringing the Legion as an Allied force to any Imperial army. So what does will that look like?

I got a game of Kill Team in today at the Battle Zone. I played Mr. Ed and his Space Wolves. I've played a few games of this stripped down version of 40k and I've loved every game so far! I've switched my team up every time so far, and this time I went all Slaanesh!

10 Daemonettes

Alluress with Lesser Gift (Warp Blade)

10 Daemonettes w/ Alluress (no upgrades)

My three specialist had Shred, Furious Charge, and Infiltrate

Mr. Ed brought a pack of Wolfguard and a Lone Wolf. He had 11 men versus my 20, but each of his men were packing power armor, bolters, bolt pistol, and CC weapons. His Lone Wolf was quite a surprise with 2 wounds and Feel No Pain, with an increased stat line.

To cut to the chase, he won the game, but it was a rough victory! At turn 7 he had 3 wolves remaining and I had a single daemonette! He beat me with victory points, scoring first blood first, kill the leader, and holding two out of three objectives at the end.

The mission was Alone in the Dark; which is a scary place to be with Daemonettes running about. We had Night Fight for the whole game and several of our troops gained the Outflank rule. Funnily enough, neither of us opted to use that rule! We wanted all of our models on the board to start with!

My strategy was clear, run like hell towards his units. His strategy was a little more mixed. He positioned himself in cover and fired away, but occasionally he charged forward to deny me the charge and to engage a single daemonette before several jumped on a single marine.

I will say that my dice swung wildly. I made the first 4 invulnerable saves without even blinking. Then on the second turn with all sorts of assaults happening, I failed to score a single rending hit! I will say that the dice evened out in the end, as both of our forces were decimated, and turn by turn it was a nail biter!

My impression of Slaanesh Kill Teams is that they are fast! Having Fleet to re-roll run moves AND adding 3" to each Run makes them very mobile. Mr. Ed was surprised to see me surrounding his forces by Turn 2. It didn't matter, though. Daemonettes rely on weight of dice and scoring 6's! It works, but individually they aren't that great, but I'll take a 5+ invulnerable all day!

How have your Kill Team games been going? Pictures below.

Bolt Action is a 28mm WWII game published by Warlord Games. I believe it to be the closest thing to Warhammer 40k that the WWII crowd has ever had, in that one company publishes both rules and creates miniatures to match. The rules tend to be more abstract than a lot of historical rule sets created over the last 20 years, so the games are quick and action packed. Of course, you can bring tanks!

The picture at the top of the post is my progress on a set of German armor that I'm painting for a friend. I'm using Minitaire airbrush paints from Badger, which are designed to drip right into your airbrush hopper without needing to dilute them. Some colors work better than others . . .

For these vehicles I applied a base coat Dunkelgelb, which I had to mix! I used 10 drops of Craven Yellow, 2 drops of Saddle Brown, and 1 drop of Swamp Ground green. This made that odd brownish yellow that the Germans used on their tanks. The historical color actually varied in tone from month to month, so it's actually hard to get an exact replica of the color.

The reddish brown is straight Regal Red from the Minitaire line, followed by Swamp Ground for the green. I was actually able to airbrush the tank treads and tires from the Puma, though I will need to go back and touch it up with a brush.

I then coated all of the models with Future Floor Polish to give it a hard, glossy coat. The reason for this is that I'm going to apply some "black-lining" and weathering with oil paints, and the hard coat of gloss allows the oil paint to slide around better, and it protects the acrylic paint from being eaten away by the oil thinner.

After I'm done, the vehicles should look much better, something like this:

Notice the difference in lighting in both pictures, which also differs from how the colors look in natural lighting. I'm still working on my photography skills, but the above pictures at least uses a rudimentary light-box. I will take some more photos of the new models as I get more work done on them this week!
So Tyranids lost access to the BRB powers, namely Biomancy. So what did they get in exchange? I'm taking a look at their new Powers of the Hive Mind. Honestly, a few are very 'meh' while some are actually pretty good. Not Iron Arm good . . . but good.

I'm
I'm also taking a look at the new Synapse rules. They an actually allow for a fearless horde to run across the field under your total control, but your plans can be devestated if you lose your synapse creatures early in the game. That will be the trick, keeping them all alive until your other units are in place. So check out my full review, along with reviews of some of the new units, like the Hive Crone:
Thanks for reading! I hope to get some new pics of my recent hobby progress up and talk about some games with my Chaos Daemons soon! Continuing my series on new Tyranid Codex Reviews, the disgusting Haruspex is on deck! This nasty creature will eat most anything in its path, and if equipped with some Biomorphs, can get Strength 8 attacks that re-roll Wounds and create additional attacks. Yes, you read that correctly! How does it do that? Keep reading!
Take a read and tell me what you think? It's a nasty customer that is definitely in need of a breath mint! People really are poo-pooing all over the new Tyranid Codex and they may be right. It does have some nice units, though. The trick will be getting them to play nicely together (and in Synapse range!).Murphy80http://www.blogger.com/profile/01223574461474845656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3289599338438901513.post-67638360583483390422014-01-12T06:32:00.002-08:002014-01-26T14:50:32.805-08:00New Exocrine & Hive Crone Review

Overnight I wrote two more reviews for the new 6th edition Tyranid codex: the Tyranid Hive Crone and the new Tyranid Exocrine! The Hive Crone is not as bad as everyone says it is, and the Exocrine is basically an extreme plasma cannon tank!

Regarding the Tyranid codex as a whole, I think it's on par with most of the 6th edition releases, with the exception of Tau and Eldar. These two codex got some amazing units that are flattening opposition across the tournament team. The new Tyranids are not that at first glance, but I think they will be competitive in standard games against more opponents. Time will tell.
It's been a bit since I've blogged, but I have been busy. First, I've written a review of the new Tyranid Harpy, covering its rules and some general tactics on the tabletop. I've been doing very well with FMCs in my Daemon army, so I thought I'd share some experiences.
In other news, I've been doing a lot of painting and playing with my Chaos Daemons. What happened to the Eldar??! They are still here, but I need to still put a lot of models together to modernize them. The Daemons had been winning with what I had and a few scratch-builds, so I kept going with them. Besides, when I did well with the Eldar I often felt a little cheesy . . . when I do well with the Daemons, people seem to take it with manners :) I don't run any of the "cheese" daemon lists, so that's probably why!

I'll be posting again soon, with more Tyranid reviews and more photos of my recent modeling. Hint: that airbrush works really well for Plaguebearers! Murphy80http://www.blogger.com/profile/01223574461474845656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3289599338438901513.post-42150876883512934472013-09-08T08:12:00.003-07:002014-01-26T14:51:43.209-08:00New Units Review - Space Marine Codex!

So the new Space Marine Codex is in hand and the reviews have begun! I'm really loving the Chapter Tactics and I wish that my Traitor Legions had received the same love. Future supplements may fix this, but until then, I'll look towards the Loyalist side for inspiration of what's to come.

I've written a two part review of the new Codex, with more to come as time allows this week. So far I've covered the new army rules, Chapter Tactics, and threw in some information about Special Characters. Don't believe all the hype and rumors from before. Now we have the official rules in hand! Click the link to read my New Space Marine Codex Review!
The new Black Legion supplement is out for CSM, available for the ipad (epub and hardback due out in a few months). We've had some users online share the basic rules on various web forums and so far the response has been mixed, boarding on underwhelming. What do I mean?

First, let's look at rundown of the new army rules:

Every model that can must take Veterans of the Long War

Chosen are troops, even without taking Abaddon.

If Abaddon is taken as an HQ, he can upgrade one unit of terminators to have +1 WS and +1 BS for something like 6 points a model (and they must also buy Veterans of the Long War).

That's it! I mean... that's it? Well, it is for "Army Rules" but we have new Warlord Traits and new Artifacts of Chaos. Copied from Cheexsta from Warseer:

"There's a new Daemon Sword, slightly cheaper than the Axe of a Blind
Fury. Gives a bonus to initiative. Should've always been in the codex,
IMHO.

There's an awesome artefact that allows the bearer to fire an unlimited
range large blast that scores D3 automatic penetrating hits to any
vehicle it touches, usable once per game. Very expensive, though.

A psyker-only artefact increases the bearer's mastery by 1, though it
doesn't allow him to generate another power (boo). Instead, it gives him
a Nova power that increases range with more Warp Charge points.

Oh hey, an artefact that gives Eternal Warrior and Adamanitium Will. Nice. Not cheap, though.

Warlord Traits:
1. Black Crusader
2. Rerolls to Chaos Boon table for the Warlord.
3. A one-use Flamer. Woo.
4. Warlord has IWND.
5. Attacks have a chance of causing Instant Death.
6. Friendly units near the Warlord have Stubborn."

So the reaction has been mixed. Few people like the idea of running Chosen as troops and the upgrade to Terminators is okay... but it's making them more and more expensive, even before wargear upgrades. I'm mixed on it.

However, people seem to be liking the new Warlord Traits and the new Artifacts. I like the idea of Chosen, but they are damned expensive. I've created several variations and they all end up around 200 points for an 7-8 man squad before Rhino. Let me share one that I like:

6 Chosen with VotLW and Mark of Slaanesh

+1 power sword

1 Chosen Champion with VotLW, Mark of Slaanesh, and a power sword

184 points

This unit gives us 28 attacks on a charge, at Initiative 5, with re-rolls against any Space Marine army due to Hatred. The champion should win any challenges against I4 or lower characters (excluding terminator armor). Also, the unit itself has a "hidden" power sword that can't be challenged-out. Let's see what they can do:

The non-power-sword Chosen should inflict 2.5 unsaved wounds versus loyal marines

The power-sword Chosen should inflict 1.5 unsaved wounds

The Champion (in a challenge) should inflict 1 unsaved wound (more if not challenged).

A total of 5 unsaved wounds before your loyal marine enemies can strike back.

In return, versus even a space marine assault squad, your Chosen should only receive 0.83 unsaved wounds in return (so either 0 or 1 barring some damned-lucky rolling).

This is all done in your Assault Phase, so in your opponent's turn, you should wipe out the remaining marines (considering you will now have 1 power swords attacking the squad now that the Champ is free). You should then be free to assault a unit on your next turn. Rinse and Repeat.

Obviously there are some problems with this build. There is no Assault transport option, except to put them in a separate Land Raider. Hmm. They can take a Rhino... move up, get out, hope they don't get shot, and then assault on the next turn. This is basically what Assault Squad on the loyalist side have to do... however, at cheaper points for slightly worse troops.

I think the idea here, and with much of 40k now, is Target Saturation. It's the idea that you must present to your opponent so many credible threats that they are forced to "pick their poison". Yes, this squad of Chosen can get shot all to hell... but what if they are running next to an allied unit of Daemonettes? Mark of Nurgle Obliterators? Chaos Bikers?

This is how I run my Chaos Daemons army... Everything is melee oriented, and they are all running across the board. I win more games than most due to Target Saturation. Albeit, Daemons are now cheaper than Chosen... but the same tactic can be modified.

So the cat is out of the bag and we are seeing our first images of the Centurion models for the Space Marine Codex due out this September. Websites from Facebook to blogs have been reporting on these images for a few hours now, but what I want to do is break down what is ON the models to see what we can expect.
So let's look at the image above and see what they are equipped with. First, you will note that these are painted as Imperial Fists, which is interesting because the IF have always been known as siege specialists to rival the traitor Iron Warriors (in fact, the two chapters had a bit of a tiff a few years ago...). This is a cool choice because of what the centurions are armed with.

All three models are armed with dual assault drills, which first made their appearance as a dreadnought close combat weapon from Forge Worlds years ago. So what do they do? Assault drills (as far as I know) are x2 Str and roll 2d6 for armor penetration against buildings. If they penetrate, they are allowed to make an immediate heavy flamer attack against the occupants within the building.

This will likely change some for 6th edition 40k. First, these assault drills DO have a flamer attached to them. You can see the promethian fuel tanks hanging down in some of the drills and the barrels of the flamer attached to the outside. I don't believe these are heavy flamers, due to the small size.

Something to consider, I think that the assault drills will also get the same advantage versus vehicles. Honestly, how many players use buildings and structured fortifications that GW would feel the need to make a specialized unit to counter them? So in that sense, I think the assault drills will count like chain-fists and have Armorbane as a special rule.

What else are they equipped with? On their torsos, two of the models have what look like assault launchers from the Ironclad Dreadnought (assault and defensive grenades). While the centurion at the top has 6 barrels which looks like a hurricane bolter. So let's add that all up:

Two assault drills

Twin-linked flamers (possibly heavy flamers, but it doesn't look like it)

Assault launchers (assault and defensive grenades)

Optional hurricane bolters

What about stats? These are 100% speculation on my part, based on the similarities to Obliterators from Chaos and the fact that they don't want to step on Terminators' toes.

Basic marines stats - these guys aren't Veterans, just heavily equipped.

2 wounds

3+ armor with a 5+ invulnerable

possibly a 2+ armor with 5+ invulnerable with increased point cost

What do you guys think? Comments are welcome. Thanks for reading. Murphy Out!Murphy80http://www.blogger.com/profile/01223574461474845656noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3289599338438901513.post-13787897717887711682013-08-07T09:50:00.001-07:002014-01-26T14:51:15.480-08:00Warzone: Damnos

It's been unofficially announced that September will bring a host of new 40k products, the greatest of which will be the new Codex: Space Marines. While this will be amazing, no doubt, I was also intrigued by another release, Warzone: Damnos. As I bought the Apocalypse book when it came out, I'm interested in any other Apocalypse material. So what is Damnos?
I did a little bit of research and found the following information:

Ultramarines lead by Cpt. Sicarius attempt to rescue and Imperial mining colony amidst the awakening of a Necron tomb world.

The conflict is mentioned in the 5th edition Space Marine codex.

Damnos is given the full narrative treatment in the 2011 book, The Fall of Damnos, by Black Library author, Nick Kyme (of Salamanders fiction fame).

So what can we expect in the Warzone: Damnos book? I simply have to look at the Warzone: Armageddon that was included in the Apocalypse book as a guide.

History of the conflict.

Plenty of artwork for major characters and maps of the area.

3+ new battle scenarios

Order of Battle for at least one scenario, describing the historical troops used.

New Strategic Asset Cards

Possible new Unnatural Disaster and Terrain

New Apocalypse Formations for Ultramarines

New Apocalypse Formations for Necrons

Possible new Datasheet for units/super-heavies.

On that last bullet, I don't expect there to be any new datasheets for Necrons, as their new super-heavies are included in the main Apocalypse book. However, they might take the pictures and stats from the Forge World Necron books, which might have things like the Necron Pylons, etc.

It's possible that the Ultramarines Formations will include models from the new Codex: Space Marine coming out in the same month. In fact, I guarantee this. So what models will be included in new formations? If rumor has it, we will see a formation with:

Hunter/Stalker tank (anti-air rhino variant)

Dreadmarine (power-armor in exo-skeleton with heavy weapons)

Captain Sicarius High Command formation

So there you have it! I can't wait to see the new book and see how accurate my predictions are. If you haven't read them already, I have a series of article reviewing the new Apocalypse rulebook, with new special rules, formations, and the works. You can check it out by following the link below:

A friendly game of 40k down at the Battle Zone this afternoon. I am still getting used to the Eldar codex, so I apologized to my opponent for taking so long to look things up (which happened frequently). It wasn't the stats that I couldn't remember, it was the xenos wargear that kept me checking to verify. It was a learning lesson for me, for sure.

The photo above is one my Howling Banshees, circa mid-90's. I am borrowing my friend's 2nd edition Eldar army and adding to it to make it 6th edition compatible, and it hasn't been too difficult. Here are a few more pics before I talk about the battle:

Eldar Dire Avenger

Not too shabby? Actually, some of these models (especially the Swooping Hawk above) really grab people's attention. I hope to the rest of the army justice. Something to consider about these old paint jobs . . . these were all accomplished by "craft paint" from Wal-mart. The hobby business has come a long way since then, especially with the internet. Every advanced tool a gamer could want is available with just a few clicks away, or through order at the local game store. This was not so 15 years ago, at least not in Central Florida.

Now the battle . . . this is not a battle report. I didn't take notes or snap too many photos. I just wanted to point out a couple of things.

First, my army list was 1,350 points from Codex: Eldar and 500 points from the Dark Eldar codex.

Farseer with both Rune upgrades

Spirit Seer

5 Howling Banshees with Exarch

5 Striking Scorpions with Exarch and Scorpion Claw

8 Swooping Hawks with Exarch and sun rifle

5 Dire Avengers with Exarch

10 Dire Avengers with Exarch

5 Wraithguard with wraithcannons

5 Wraithguard with D-scythes AND Wave Serpent w/ TL scatter lasers, shuriken cannon, and holofield.

Archon with venom blade

5 Kabalite Warriors w/ Blaster in Raider w/ Dark Lance

5 Kabalite Warriors w/ Blaster in Raider w/ Dark Lance

3 Reaver Jetbikes w/ Blaster

Ravager w/ 3 Dark Lances

I felt like I had a lot of units at 1,850. I don't have enough vehicles with my Eldar, so I opted to bring some Dark Eldar allies and get some more anti-tank in the army. My goal is to bring some more heavy hitters in the future, at least 2 more wave serpents, a flyer, and maybe a wraithknight or fire prism grav-tank.

My opponent ran Typhus as his warlord, a big unit of plague zombies, a big unit of CSM marines, then Plague Marines, a land raider, havocs, 3 obliterators, and a hell drake. I wont lie, his army was intimidating with the number of heavy weapons and bolters he had pointed in my direction.

So what did I learn? First, the Eldar take a lot of book keeping. I bought the Eldar psychic powers deck and this has been very useful because I can just put the powers at the edge of my table and then place the card as its cast next to the unit. You don't know how many times I would have forgotten about a blessing or maladiction if I hadn't placed the card very near the unit in question!

Another thing is learned is that the Eldar's speed really lets you control the flow of battle. Having 4 fast skimmer on the board, reaver jet bikes, and swooping hawks really let me put models where I wanted them to be. A note: I deployed all my Raiders as empty and kept the troops scuttling around the board near my objective (Emperor's Will) to take pot shots and reinforce my line. Keeping them separate effectively doubled the unit count and presented too many targets for my opponent to shoot them all in one phase.

Even the Eldar are on foot were fast. Notice that I only had 1 transport for the Eldar, but I was still able to shift into and out of cover, and even bring reinforcements where they were needed in my deployment area to defend my objective. In fact, my unit of Howling Banshees (with the Farseer attached . . . I know, what?) were effectively out of position for the first 3 turns, but wound up tying up Typhus in assault for the last 3 turns (and saving a lot of Eldar from a needless death).

How did 5 Banshees and a Farseer tie up Typhus? Well, it all has to do with Challenges. First, he had to challenge when he assaulted me and I gladly accepted with my Exarch. I WISH that I'd had Disarming Strike on him like I did earlier, but I had removed it to save points. Typhus used his Destroyer Hive instead of attacking and only two banshees due to some low rolls. Still, with a Leadership of 10 from Farseer, I stayed on an 8. Since my banshee in the challenge didn't die, it rolled over to the next turn... Typhus killed the banshee Exarch, but I still only lost the combat by 1 and stayed in with a modified Leadership of 9.

On my next turn, he challenged again and my Farseer decided to step back; Typhus killed the remaining 2 banshees, but the Farseer made is invulnerable saves to stay alive and, at -2 leadership, made his roll to stay in the fight. The next turn, he and Typhus traded blows and with my invulnerable, I stayed a live for my phase, only finally to be cut down in my opponent's last go.

So there's a lesson here. With a high leadership unit with multiple characters, it can take a lot of turns to chew through a squad! If I could have given that Exarch the disarm skill and then an invulnerable, I might have had the unit alive at the end of the game. MY big mistake, however, was getting the Farseer stuck in there as it put my Warlord at a lot of risk and gave my opponent Slay the Warlord at the end. However, as my Farseer only had Blessing and Maladictions in his list, it didn't hurt his ability to cast, and as he didn't accept a challenge until he was the last alive, he didn't have many wounds allocated to him through multiple rounds of combat. Finally, it was his leadership of 10 that allowed me to stay in the fight longer than I should have. So there you have it.

So how about some snapshots of the battle?

Dang, Plague Zombies...

So did I win or lose? Okay, I won. I was able to synergize a few units from turns 4-6 to contest my opponent's objective, while I successfully defended my own. I sacrificed my blog of swooping hawks to distract his CSM's from killing my last 3 striking scorpions (pictured above in a fight with plague zombies), which were able to assault the next turn, and survive long enough to turbo-boost my reaver jetbikes to contest his objective on turn 6.

If he hadn't of shot at the swooping hawks (which he had to), my striking scorpions couldn't have assaulted (which they were lucky to survive the turn... thank you scorpion claw), which would have allowed him to shoot my reavers as they zoomed in to contest.

Haven't people been telling you that Eldar are a finesse army? :)

A couple of closing thought. I hate my own Heldrake. Yes, I let him borrow my model and I was now (for the first time) on the receiving end of that bale flamer. Holy cow, that is a scary unit. If you don't have a dedicated anti-flyer unit (which I didn't) then just be prepared to roll over and die. I only killed it because my opponent dropped it into hover mode so it could keep frying the troops sitting on my objective. Even with hitting it on normal BS, it still took 5 of myf units shooting at it to inflict 3 hull points... twin-linked scatter lasers, 5 D-scythes (hoping for Distorts and getting them!), a blaster, 3 dark lances from a Ravager, and a dark lance from a raider. That thing just kept making that Daemon 5+ save!

The Heldrake that Will Not Die! Night Lords conversion.

On the counter point, D-scythes just eat marines. Even plague marines. Nuff said.

That about does it. Any questions? Any comments? I'd love to hear from the community your thought on Eldar, Heldrakes, and when the two meet in the darkened alley behind the Chinese restaurant.
Alright, so the above photo is not really a bloodletter, but he is different enough (and cool enough) to stand in as the squad leader. I was really inspired by the cover of the Chaos Daemon Codex, where the bloodletter there is lit from fire below. I've been working on my airbrushing skills and I think these guys came out great. These models are old, OOP bloodletters from a few years back, gotten cheap at my local store. Half of them were missing arms and axes, so I had to improvise with various other bits I had on stock.
I did a directional lighting by holding the models by the feet and spraying color "up" the model. I started with an airbrush red, then orange, and finally a yellow highlight. To be honest, the yellow jumps out more on the photo than it does on the miniature, as my photo editor is making a brighter contrast between it and the orange shades. Oh well.
Notice the blending on their axes. I've seen a few power weapon videos using airbrushes, so I thought I'd give it a try and I'm pleased with the results. Note that the only standard "brushwork" on these is the pupils in their eyes. Everything else is airbrush.
Right after the release of the new Eldar Codex, I was gifted, my friend, Mike's old Eldar. When I say old, I mean 2nd edition. These are the miniatures and army he ran back in the later 1990's. I am sure some of the models will look familiar because many of these sculpts have not been updates since then . . . although they have been converted to Finecast. As old as these sculpts are, they have stood the test of time, and what's more, Mike's paint jobs are still beautiful.

Take the Fire Dragons below. Every detail on these models was hand painted.

So what do you think? His entire army was always a show stopper, and it has the honorary distinction of being undefeated Literally, he never lost a game of 2nd edition Warhammer 40k. He will freely admit, though, that this has more to do with the cheesiness of the 2nd Ed. Eldar army list than his amazing tactics. Simply put, you could run very small squads that had a lot of firepower and were worth almost nothing in terms of victory points. He would lose almost his entire army by the end of the game, but still come out on top with victory points.

He hasn't played in many, many years, so he let me indefinitely borrow his army to start a new Eldar army for 6th edition. The problem? Back in the day, you could run 3-man Aspect Warrior squads, so these men plus their Exarch (who was basically an independent character back then), only gives me 4-man Aspect Warriors squads. It sucks to be 1-man short across nearly an entire army :)

Thankfully, he does have some full squads of certain units and some quick ebay buying has given me a few more. I can run about 1,500 points with what I have. That will soon be fixed! Alright, I will post more photos of these great models soon. In the mean time, if you haven't checked out my New Eldar Codex Review, click the link below.
I've updated my Space Marines Apocalypse Formations review to include the 3 space wolf formations in the rule book. Why not? This one article covers the lists and special rules for all the vanilla marine formations, some Black Templars, and the Grey Wolves now. You can also find my main Apocalypse article here, too.
Finally, the review I wanted to get to: Space Marines Apocalypse Formations. If you are interested in the special rules for these formations, or what models you need to bring to qualify, then click the link below:
I can tell you that bringing a full battle company of marines is just great. They really give the formation a cinematic feel for what space marines are supposed to do. This is something that I've noticed with a lot of the formations in the book: the armies actually playing like the fluff tells us they are capable of, but are often limited by balance rules in the game itself.

I've finally got up part 3 of my Apocalypse Formations List and Rules. What exactly can the Necrons bring to the Apocalypse battlefield? What about the mighty Orks? When will I get to the Space Marines, already? Follow the link below to read Part 3 of my review:
I've gone back and updated my earlier Apocalypse Formations articles. Now that I have the book, I've updated the actual compositions of the Formations and I've now included the special rules that come with each Formation. Check out the articles by clicking on the link below. I still have a few armies left to go, but I will get on that very soon!
